  • Protecting Creation: Solar PV at Religious Institutions Driven by Feed-in Tariffs (wind-works.com) Apr 21, 2011

    Religious institutions in Ontario and worldwide are adopting solar, writes Paul Gipe at wind-works.com:

    One powerful advantage of feed-in tariff policies for developing renewable energy is that they permit the participation of people from all walks of life. You do not have to be Florida Power & Light to build a solar plant on your rooftop.


    There's no better example of this than congregations who use feed-in tariff policy to fulfill their faith's injunction to protect creation by installing a solar photovoltaic (PV) system on or near their church, synagogue, or mosque.

    Though the process is just getting underway in Ontario, where their sophisticated system of feed-in tariffs was implemented in the fall of 2009, several religious institutions have announced plans to build solar installations or have already done so.

    From the Toronto Star:

     

    Ontario’s family physicians and nurses are launching an advertising campaign to defend wind and solar power.

    The ads, to run in western Ontario and Niagara newspapers, will be sponsored by the Ontario College of Family Physicians and the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario, and by the Asthma Society of Canada and Ontario Lung Association.

    Ontario’s Liberal government has pledged to shut the coal plants by 2014.

    But an election is looming in this fall, campaign spokesman Gideon Forman said in an interview.

    “We don’t know who’s going to be in government in October 2011,” said Forman, who is executive director of the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment.
